Any kind of motor on a boat requires a registration.

Depending on you age a NJ safe boating certificate may be required. A license is not required.

    In New Jersey:
All titled boats must also be registered. In addition, all power
vessels, regardless of length, must be registered.

And in NJ all persons who wish to operate a power vessel must possess a Boating Safety Certificate by June 1, 2009.

    Good Luck – Boat Safe!

i would call the nearest coast guard or coast guard auxillary. in a few minutes you’ll have your answer. you could also look up the marine regualtions for your state – probably on the DEP website or even through links from the DMV. it depends on what your state calls a power driven vessel, and if they have horsepower limits that determine the need for a license and registration.

boats with engines under 10hp need not be registered, getting a boaters license is smart even if you dont need it
