Used Trolling Motors

Anybody who does any lake fishing knows the value of a good trolling motor. Nothing worse than trying to cruise into a fishing hole with the outboards blazing.

There are both gas and electric powered trolling motors although the majority of them are electric since they are more quiet and produce less vibration.

Electric trolling motors were invented by O.G Schmidt in 1943. He actually made the first one from a started motor out of a Model A Ford and used a flexible shaft with a propeller. His dandy new invention became what is now the Minn Kota company which is still a major manufacturer of trolling motors today.trolling motor

Today’s trolling motors take advantage of the 12 volt deep cycle batteries and can go quite a while with out needing to be recharged.

When looking to buy a used trolling motor, you need to figure out how much thrust to weight ratio you will need so it will adequately propel your boat through the water. To be safe, it’s best to buy the largest powered motor your budget will allow for. It’s no problem being overpowered because you can always throttle down, but being underpowered can make for a long afternoon.

It’s best to look for the 24 or 36 volt trolling motors. These will typically provide you plenty of thrust and will allow you to fish longer hours since they won’t drain the battery as quickly.

It’s also a good practice to bring an extra charged battery along once you found the used trolling motor your looking for and actually have gone fishing. Nothing worse than having to cut an afternoon short because the trolling motor battery went dead.
